4th of July
We are in the midst of this fun-filled season and all the activities that come with it: pool parties, backyard barbeques, and 4th of July fireworks. As you pack your social calendar with fun events, use these tips to keep your fur babies safe, happy, and healthy.
- Always have a safe place for your pet
While pets and people are different in many ways, we are similar in that some of us like to be around people and some of us do not. If you have a more introverted pet, do not force these interactions. Keep your dog home if she does not like crowds, loud noises, or is prone to anxiety in unfamiliar situations. If you do choose to bring your dog, provide a go-to place where she can relax – a crate, her favorite bedding or blankets – anything that will provide a safe and secure feeling.
- Use pet-friendly sunscreen and insect repellants
Dogs who are white, light-colored, or hairless are especially prone to sunburns. Sunscreens and repellants made specifically for people may cause adverse side effects when applied to pets, so choose pet-friendly products. Your vet will be able to offer suggestions that will best fit the needs of your dog. Also, our staff at Social Pet™ is happy to apply the products you provide! Additionally, ensure flea and tick medications along with heartworm medications are administered regularly.
- Be cautious of food and drinks
Many of our favorite picnic foods can be detrimental to the health of our pets. While it is best to avoid feeding table scraps to our pets, fatty foods, corn on the cob, and alcohol should especially be avoided. As you light up the grill or your fire pit, make sure all lighter fluid, matches, and charcoal stay out of paws’ reach.
- Keep emergency contact information close
You may have your regular vet on speed dial, but in case of an after-hours emergency it is wise to know the information for the nearest 24-hour animal hospital. Carolina Veterinary Specialists is the closest 24-hour hospital to Social Pet™ and where we would take your dog in case of an after-hours emergency. If your dog is accompanying you on your next road trip, store the information of the closest vet at your destination in your phone for quick access in the case of an emergency. Also, another helpful number is the Pet Poison Helpline: 855-764-7661.
Social Pet™ has many features that keep your dog cool in the heat of summer. Our tents, misters, and pools provide relief from the summer sun, and we are working to install a large awning for further protection. We also have a cooled warehouse for our brachycephalic friends, senior pups, and for those times where it’s just too hot to play outside.
If your dog is boarding over 4th of July, the closest fireworks show is several miles away. However, if dogs hear any fireworks, we will either bring them into the warehouse to play or bring them inside to relax. Our building is well-insulated and quiet which will allow for a restful night’s sleep. Bring a Thundershirt™ or a special toy, treat, or bedding for extra comfort at night. You can also reserve a Yappy Hour or Nightly Turndown Service to ensure they get the maximum one-on-one time with our staff. We are honored that you trust us to care for your pets in your absence and we enjoy partnering with you to give them the best possible experience at Social Pet™!
